Chinese Ink Wash Hanging Scroll of Meng Haoran with Plum Blossoms

Item Details

A Chinese hanging scroll with an ink wash painting titled Meng Haoran Seeks Plum Blossoms (孟浩然寻梅 Meng Haoran xun mei). The painting, rendered in black and gray ink on rice paper, depicts the Tang dynasty (618-907) poet Meng Haoran (孟浩然, 689/691-740). His face shows a satisfied smile as he gazes at the branches of plum blossoms he has gathered. The work is backed with paper and mounted as a hanging scroll of white silk brocade with a geometric floral pattern. The bottom of the scroll has a dark wooden scroll rod, and the top has a red ribbon for hanging. The title and an artist’s signature are in the lower right corner alongside two red seals. The outside of the scroll is also inscribed with the title.
