Charley Harper Limited Edition Signed Serigraph "Baffling Belly"

Item Details

A signed, limited edition serigraph by beloved Cincinnati artist Charley Harper titled Baffling Belly. This print features a striped red-bellied woodpecker, picking out its lunch which happens to be a big, striped green bug. In fact, stripes encompass most of this work, allowing the bird to slip slightly into the background. Numbered 818/1500 and signed in pencil to lower margin. Mounted beneath dual layers of coordinating mats, this print is presented behind glass in a black frame with a woven motif. Hanging wire present to verso.

Harper frequently wrote poetic quips about his work, including this bit about Baffling Belly: Ever see the red-bellied woodpecker perch on a birch, potato beetle in beak? Neither did the artist, so he painted this picture to find out how it would look. This is the bird with the belly that baffles beginning birders, so its zebra back is turned toward you to avoid a credibility crisis: could you ever again trust the names of the golden-cheeked warbler, the rufous-sided towhee, the rose-breasted grosbeak – even the blue-footed booby – after seeing the red-belly’s belly? It’s almost all white!’
