Antique Structo Toy Tow Truck
Item Details
Antique 1920’s stamped steel wind-up Structo ‘Toyland Garage’ tow truck, made in Freeport Ill. . The truck cab is painted red with a gray bed. The wind-up feature is on the bottom. Comes with a metal tow chain. The sides feature yellow and black decals.
According to an article in the Journal Standard by Harriet Gustason, ‘In the years just prior to 1920, Structo delved into making motor-driven toys. However, the management refused to put that truck into production because the retail price would have to be $1 and they felt this price too high for the average consumer to pay. The 1920s saw Structo making stamped steel wind-up and push toys. Some of them had spring motors. In 1932, an article states, the mechanized toy line was transformed into push-type stamped steel toys. The company made assorted trucks, vans and passenger cars, as well as steam shovels and other construction equipment.’
