Original Salvador Dali Crucifixion (Corpus Hypercubus)

Item Details

An original, extremely rare, etching with aquatint and hand coloring by the father of surrealism, Salvador Dali (1904 – 1989). This print is exceedingly rare and is entitled ‘Crucifixion (Corpus Hypercubus),’ this etching is essentially a copy of the original painting which is widely agreed upon as one of the most important paintings of the latter part of Dali’s career. This print and its subject are seen as a departure from Dali’s more highly surreal work that occurred in the 40s and 50s. This work is highly involved with Dali’s art theory ‘nuclear mysticism,’ which he was moved to introduce by nuclear events of WWII, particularly the bombing of Hiroshima. The print depicts Christ hovering above a dreary landscape that’s subtly surreal, mostly just deserted. The cross is composed entirely of hypercubes, which imply transcendence and divinity. Dali’s wife, Gala, stands before Christ, who is strangely completely devoid of wounds. At the bottom of the print appears the text ‘Grave et imprime par les ’Ateliers Martinez’ a Paris. Edite par ‘International Multiples Ltd.’’ The print is part of a series of artist’s proofs printed in an incredibly limited edition of 75, of which it is the 15th print pulled. The print is pencil signed by Dali to the bottm right hand corner, and presented in a beautiful gilt wood framed with a thick, cloth, black mat terminating in a gold beveled edge. The print exhibits a 1982 IML watermark to the bottom left hand corner.
