Gertrude Sanford Legendre Original Oil on Canvas Still Life
Item Details
An original signed oil on canvas still life painting, circa 1930s, by 20th century socialite, World War II spy, and big-game hunter Gertrude Sanford Legendre (1902 – 2000). This prominent figure in early-20th century American social life is only known to have made a few hobby paintings, making this piece a rare artifact from her colorful life. The painting depicts a bright Modernist still life of two pieces of fruit; the piece exhibits a style ahead of its times, exemplifying the artist’s general forward-thinking outlook on life. The painting is signed to the lower right and is matted in cream linen with a white wood fillet and is presented in a wooden frame with brushed gold tone finish. A card attached to the verso says the piece came from the Estate of J. Moore, widow of Clement Moore, author of The Night Before Christmas. More information about the artist can be found under Additional Information.
