Bruce Johnson "Undulation" Carved Tulip Poplar Wood Sculpture
Item Details
An original Bruce Johnson carved tulip poplar wood sculpture titled Undulation. This nonrepresentational piece has a thin, wall-like meandering form, with gouged texture throughout one side and a smooth surface on the other that evokes a Mid-Century Modern feel.
Bruce Johnson took up carving as a hobby, initially working on bas-reliefs. In 1978 he studied briefly with a noted Baltimore sculptor, who introduced him to the direct carving of three-dimensional abstract forms in wood. He has shown his sculptures in various art shows in Virginia, Maryland and the District of Columbia and has received a number of commissions. In 1985 he retired from a career with the Federal Government to devote more time to his carving.
