Fremont Ellis Portrait Titled "Bambi"
Item Details
A 1960s vintage original oil painting by listed artist Fremont Ellis (American, 1897-1985) featuring a portrait of a woman with dark hair wearing a high-necked yellow gown. The woman looks to the side with an arch expression on her face; a vase of white daisies sits on a table at the foreground and a woman with dark braids wearing a red and blue shawl is seen in the background, looking on. The canvas is surrounded by a white washed and gold finished frame with a linen liner. A 2001 exhibition label is affixed to the back from a major retrospective of the artist’s work presented by the prestigious Nedra Matteucci Gallery in Santa Fe. The painting has a provenance by direct descent through the artist’s family.
Fremont Ellis was born in Virginia City, Montana, and was the son of a traveling dentist. After a visit to the Metropolitan Museum of Art and a few months of instruction at the Art Students League, Ellis settled in Santa Fe, New Mexico. He was a member of Los Cinco Pintores society of modern artists in the 1920s, which established the art colony in Santa Fe, New Mexico. His plein aire landscapes are defined by a richly colored impressionist style and quietly sublime vistas of the natural beauty of the American Southwest. Ellis was awarded a gold medal in 1975 from the National Cowboy Hall of Fame in Oklahoma City, and his work is found in private and public collections.
