Richard Earlom Mezzotint After Claude Lorrain
Item Details
A mezzotint etching by listed artist Richard Earlom (1743-1822) after a pastoral landscape by Claude Lorrain. Earlom was commissioned by publisher John Boydell to make prints of all 200 drawings by Claude Lorrain included in his book Liber Veritatis. Lorrain’s book was made by the artist to record his completed paintings as drawings. Earlom’s prints were compiled in a book and published by Boydell. This print recalls Lorrain’s renowned romantic landscapes in sepia tones, with classical Roman-inspired architecture on the left and the sun dramatically illuminating the entire scene. The inscription at the bottom reads, ‘Claude le Lorrain delin, No. 173, Published Dec’ 1776 by John Boydell Engraver in Cheapside, R. Earlom Fecit.’ The sticker on the back reads, ‘Art Lore, Pastorale by Claude Lorraine, Original Old Engraving, S56-227.’ This print is displayed in a wood frame with a carved geometric pattern.
