An original oil on canvas titled Dans Le Serengeti by Mark Beard under the pseudenym Hippolyte Alexandre Michallon. This large composition depicts an African landscape with a male lion and a recumbent lioness in the foreground. Flaking the landscape is a group of trees behind which are four antelopes and a pair of zebra. The lower right corner is signed ‘HA Michallon’ and dated ‘1889’. The painting is housed in a molded wood frame with a gilt name plate.
Mark Beard paints under five different persona. Hippolyte Alexandre Michallon (1849-1930) was a French artist primarily known for his animal paintings. Michallon was born in Tours and studied at the École des Beaux-Arts under François-Édouard Picot. He gained notoriety after switching his focus from historical scenes to animal paintings, eventually relocating to London to teach at the Slade.Condition
