Item Details

An original artist’s proof woodcut titled God Bless America by well-listed African American Cincinnati painter and illustrator Thom Shaw (1942-2010), created in 2001. The print depicts two toilets in a tiled room with plaques labeling ‘white’ and ‘colored’ above the toilets. On the wall behind the toilets is written ‘God Bless America’ with a tilted flag. The print is signed dated and numbered in pencil to the lower margin. Presented behind glass in a black metal frame with white matting and a wire to the verso.

Shaw was born in Cincinnati, Ohio where he worked at Cincinnati Bell as a graphic designer for 27 years. He was first discovered in the art world in 1973 when Barbara Miller mounted hiss first solo show at the Miller Gallery. He is best known for these black and white woodcuts which graphically depict the horrors of inner-city life.
