A handwoven silk Kashan prayer rug. The rug displays an intricate tree of life design within a mirhab, or prayer niche, in shades of cream, pale blue and indigo, and browns with vibrant red in the tree and foliate details. The guard borders have a pale blue field with carnation pattern, flanking a wide principal border in ruby red, with an ornate small lobed flower and flame motif. It has a small kilim skirt and hand-knotted, cotton fringe to either end. Unmarked. Kashan rugs are recognized by UNESCO as ‘Masterpieces of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity’ for their artistry and creativity.
