1896 Cincinnati Zoo Animal Photographs by Enno Meyer

Item Details

A set of animal cabinet card photographs taken by Enno Meyer at the Cincinnati Zoo in 1896. It features lions, camels, wolves, elephants, bison, bear (both brown and polar), and tigers. One of the more interesting images is of tiger cubs suckling on a female dog. Many of the pictures were published in Studies in Zoology: A Book Devoted to Animals and Animal Life at the Cincinnati Zoological Garden (1900). Enno Meyer (American, 1874-1947) was a nationally reknown painter, sculptor, dog breeder, and dog show judge, most noted for his portraiture of thoroughbred horses and champion dogs. Meyer attended the Cincinnati Art Academy and was a member of the Cincinnati Art Club. Please see 16CIN344-145 for additional photographs by the artist.
