1896 Native American Cincinnati Zoo Photographs by Enno Meyer
Item Details
A set of nine Native American cabinet card photographs taken by Enno Meyer at the Cincinnati Zoo in 1896. They depict groups of Lakota Sicangu Sioux men, women, and children who were featured as part of a cultural information and exchange program. Meyer (Cincinnati, 1874-1947) was a nationally renowned painter, sculptor, dog breeder and dog show judge, most noted for animal thoroughbred portraiture and photography. Please see 16CIN344-146 for additional photographs by the artist. Meyer attended the Cincinnati Art Academy and was a member of the Cincinnati Art Club. He took the photographs included in a pamphlet distributed by the Cincinnati Zoo, Studies in Zoology: A Book Devoted to Animals and Animal Life at the Cincinnati Zoological Garden, published by the zoo in 1900. He was so well known and beloved of dog breeders throughout the country that his 1921 wedding announcement to ‘Miss June Scanlon’ was published in the September (1921) issue of Dog Fancier magazine. His photography was well-recognized and wide-ranging, including a photographic portrait of Martha, the last passenger pigeon, in 1914.
