An oil painting titled Mission Viejo After an Earthquake, by Capt. A Axel. The painting depicts the 1812 Wrightwood earthquake, also known as the San Juan Capistrano earthquake. The earthquake that struck December 8, 1812 destroyed the Mission San Juan Capistrano’s Great Stone Church, as well as collapsing the Mission San Gabriel Arcángel’s bell structure. The earthquake occurred during the first service and fourty Native Americans were killed in the earthquake. The work is marked ‘in early spring morn 1908’ to the lower right corner. Set in a dark wood frame.
