Carlisle & Finch Antique Train Set

Item Details

An antique Cincinnati made Carlisle and Finch tin standard gauge train set circa 1908. The Cincinnati-based Carlisle & Finch is recognized as the inventor of the electric toy train. Having first produced small electric motors with success, the two electrical engineers Robert S Finch and Morten Carlisle began producing the toy trains to increase revenue by utilizing the small engines they built. This lot includes the #4 0-4-0 locomotive with tender, a gondola car, a box car, and a caboose with a circle of track and the railroad ties the track fits into, a switch piece and a Jefferson Electric Midget toy transformer. The black painted locomotive features a drive mechanism similar to clockwork toys of the time and is embossed 131 to the engine with N&M embossed to both the tender and caboose. The locomotive engine is mounted to a wood frame base that is in good condition, and the remaining pieces also feature the wood frame design that was a hallmark of the manufacturer. Untested.
