Antique Charcoal Sandpaper Drawings
Item Details
A pair of antique charcoal sandpaper drawings. Both drawings in shades of black and gray depict landscapes. Each is presented under glass with wood frames and wires to the back for hanging. The larger rural farmscape features a barn, rolling hillsides and grazing cattle. This drawing is matted in off-white and the frame is black wood with black and gilt paint. A paper tag to the back provides details on Silas Wood, Jr. (American, 1816-1885), an itinerant artist who popularized this type of artwork in the late nineteenth century. The smaller drawing features a moonlit landscape and it is presented in an ornamental gesso on wood frame with silver metallic finish. It is backed with a piece of wood. Hudson River Valley scenes were typical for sandpaper drawings.
