An antique 1890 signed drypoint etching by artist, botanist, and pioneer photojournalist Ernest Christian Rost (New York/California, 1867 – 1940), titled The Old Elm Road, released in 1890. The image depicts a rural scene featuring a tree-lined dirt road with countryside houses in the distance. Signed in plate to the lower left-hand corner “E.C. Rost 1890”, hand-signed in pencil to lower left margin. The title is etched to the margin at the lower right corner. The print is set behind brown mat, under glass, in a beveled wood frame with dark stained finish. Rost’s etchings, photos and articles are represented in the Library of Congress, US National Archives; Brunnier Art Museum, Ames, Iowa; Center for American Music – Stephen Foster Memorial University of Pittsburgh; Fine Arts Museum of San Francisco. In addition, the Huntington Library and the Smithsonian libraries have extensive files regarding his work with cacti and travel-related photography.
