Painted Russian Lacquer Box Soviet Era

Item Details

A gorgeous Russian lacquer box, produced during the Soviet era prior to 1992. The lid of box features an intricately detailed scene from a traditional Russian folk tale, with an important leader on horseback approaching a man who appears to be a simple peasant farmer. An impressive army is on the march, and in the background on a hill is a walled city. The rich color and sumptuous detail found in the trees, horses, and costumes of the figures is extraordinary. The black lacquer box has a hinged lid with gold border detail, which is echoed to lower portion of box as well. There is some writing in Cyrillic on the lid, which possibly denotes an artist’s name of E. G. Shiboshov. The lid opens to an interior lined in red, containing a loose tag from the place where box was purchased. Underside of piece also bears a tag indicating ‘Made in USSR.’ (Tag may indicate box came from Mstera region, where Shishakov was a prominent painter.)
