Circa 1929 Graf Zeppelin Commemorative Pocket Watch
Item Details
A circa 1929 Graf Zeppelin commemorative pocket watch. This watch has a black dial with peach tone Arabic numerals, wide peach tone arms, an inset seconds dial and a bezel marked on each cardinal direction, Lake Hurst, Friedrichshafen, Tokio and Los Angeles respectively – the names of cities stopped in by the zeppelin. The reverse has a tableau in relief depicting the Graf Zeppelin flying over three guiding ships and says ‘Trail Blazers, 1929 – Time – 21 Days, Around the World, Magellan, 1519-1522 – Time – about 3yrs’. The watch is most likely nickel plate and was manufactured by Westclox to commemorate the August 1929 flight around the world of the LZ-127 Graf Zeppelin, a German-built and operated, passenger-carrying, hydrogen-filled, rigid airship which operated commercially from 1928 to 1937.
