Thomas Corwin Lindsay Original Landscape Oil Painting on Canvas
Item Details
A fine original oil painting on canvas by very well-listed painter Thomas Corwin Lindsay (1839-1907) of Cincinnati. This painting features two young male figures on a raft to the foreground, a mill on the river bank to the middle ground, and a tree line and blue hills to the background. Painting is signed ‘T.C.L.’ to lower right hand corner. Lindsay, a well-known painter of landscapes, animal subjects and occasionally portraits was born in Cincinnati, studied in Dusseldorf, Germany and returned to Cincinnati where he opened a studio in 1857. The artist was a founding member of the extant Cincinnati Art Club. The artist received little formal training, taking to the act of expression quite naturally. The artist taught students from his studio on Fourth Street, and made an earnest living from the sale of his masterful landscapes. He frequently made copies of famous master American paintings of the time, a practice he no doubt observed to further the refinement of his oeuvre. His latter years were defined by pastoral paintings of farms and livestock.Condition
Painting is in good condition, a few small scratches to the surface and on the edges from the frame. Would benefit from cleaning. Appears to have restorative backing.
