A Japanese Meiji period ivory okimono. The okimono depicts a male figure wearing traditional Japanese clothing and straw boots; he is carrying a basket of flowers as he greets a large bird. The figure has lifelike features and delicate incised decoration to the clothing, flowers, and the feathers of the bird. The piece is signed by hand to the bottom with the artist’s name, Koichi. The Meiji period, which lasted from 1868-1912, was an era of change and modernization in Japan.
