Reproduction 1848 Panorama of Cincinnati Photographs
Item Details
A lot of eight framed early 20th century silver gelatin reproductions of a set of 1848 daguerrotypes in the ‘Panorama of Cincinnati’ series. The originals were taken by Charles Fontayne and William S. Porter on September 24, 1848 from a rooftop in Newport, Kentucky, giving a view along the riverfront. It was one of the first urban panoramas and is considered the oldest surviving comprehensive photographic view of an American city. The Cincinnati Public Library holds the original daguerrotypes as part of its collection. This lot also includes a framed lithograph of ‘Cincinnati in 1800’, with landmarks numbered and labeled in a key along the bottom edge. All nine images are framed under glass in black wood frames.
