Waterhouse was an English painter in the Pre-Raphaelite style who painted for decades beyond the break up of the Pre-Raphaelite brotherhood, earning him the nickname ‘The modern Pre-Raphaelite.’ The painting depicts a female figure as mythology’s Pandora, just beginning to open the box that unleashed evil into the world. The piece is framed behind glass in a vintage carved wood frame.
