A Memento Mori original oil painting on canvas by Herbert Ross. The canvas is presented in a dark colored wooden frame. The painting makes use of dark gray and black tones to depict a skull, a leather-bound book, and an hourglass. A sickle is resting in the foreground. Herbert Ross, a listed artist, was born in 1895 in Peewee Valley, Kentucky, just outside Louisville, to a prominent family. Ross studied at the Art Institute of Chicago and the Art Students League in New York before he moved to Paris in 1922 where he studied portrait painting. Ross later moved back to Peewee Valley, Kentucky.
