First Edition 1939 "The Seven Lady Godivas" by Dr. Suess

Item Details

A first edition The Seven Lady Godivas, The True Facts Concerning History’s Barest Family, written and illustrated by Dr. Seuss (Theodor Seuss Geisel, American,1904–1991), published by Random House and lithographed in the United States of America by Duenewald Printing Corporation. The first edition was a printing of only 10,000, which did not sell well despite the subject, and partially led Seuss to his decision to delve into writing for children rather than adults. The book features some limited red color to the printed illustrations. The front and back pasted interiors feature a Family Tree of the Godivas illustrating Seuss’s interpretation of the Godiva family history with their horses. It has a hardback tan cloth cover with a ‘family crest’ in red ink to the front, with a ribbon labeled ‘Sigl. Godiva.’ Inscribed in ink to the flyleaf, ‘To my dear husband, With sympathy, Mary / October 13, 1939.’
