Fire-Gilded Rococo Revival Garniture Mantel Clock with Candelabra

A fire-gilded Rococo Revival garniture mantel clock with a pair of matching candelabra, circa 1870. This ornate mantle clock is made of cast brass with fire-gilding overlay. At the apex of the clock is a pair of beautifully cast doves, beaks touching over a torch, resting on undulating wave forms. The round face of the clock features porcelain ’button’ Roman numerals with decorative hands with surrounding hand-painted Sevres porcelain, which has a delicate floral and foliate pattern, repeated in a cartouche just beneath the face and at the base. The face has a gilded enamel overlay in pale pink. It has two key winding arbors at the “four” and “seven” positions. Winding key is present. Acanthus leaves and volute scrolls form the sides. The rectangular base features fruit and nut patterns with large flower blossoms acanthus leaves supporting the drum. The back of the drum has a reticulated cover. It carries two plaques: one porcelain, marked ‘39864’ and ‘B9’ and one is the tag of a master clock repairer. The candleabra are done is a similar style, with three lights and decorative bobeches over reeded discs. The lights rest on ornamental leaves over a drum shape matching the clock. The face of the drum features a Sevres painting of a torch and drum, flanked on either side by crowned Grecian masks. The bases are decorated with acanthus leaves, a corbelled Sevres painting to the front and floral and foliate motifs surrounding. Unmarked.

- for age. Untested. Some minor loss of finish, and scuffs to finish. Interior of candle holders are discolored through age and use. Drum holding the escapement is corroded, appears to have been repaired with new parts. Chime unknown.
