Plaster Cast Reproduction of Stefano Maderno's "Hercules and Antaeus"
Item Details
A plaster cast reproduction sculpture after Hercules and Antaeus by Stefano Maderno (Italian, 1575-1636). Maderno depicts the wrestling match between the two mythical men. Antaeus is known in Greek mythology as a wrestler who would challenge all passers-by to a match. Antaeus remained victor as long as he remained in contact with his mother, the earth. In his 11th Labor, Heracles wrested Antaeus as he was on his way to the Garden of Hesperides, Heracles defeated Antaeus by holding him off the ground and crushing him in a bearhug. The original terra cotta work was produced during 1622 and is now housed at the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, Great Britain.
