A 1893 commemorative Columbian Half Dollar. These were minted 1892-1893 in Philadelphia, partially to raise funds for the Chicago World Exposition, and partially to commemorate the quadricentennial of Columbus’s first voyage to the Americas. It was designed by Charles E. Barber and George T. Morgan, after a concept by Olin Levi Warner, with the obverse image of Columbus based on a 16th century painting by Lorenzo Lotto, and the reverse depicts a port view of the Santa Maria above map images of two hemispheres. It is 30.61 mm diameter, 2.15 mm thickness, with reeded edge, 90% silver and 10% copper, 0.36169 troy oz.
