Antique Pickelhaube Helmet
Item Details
An antique pickelhaube helmet. The pre-1914 German Mannschaften (infantry) pickelhaube is made of leather, with a black laquered finish. It features a round-base brass spike with ventilation holes, a rounded visor trimmed with silvered brass, and features the eagle Wappen (front plate), and a back spine in silvered brass. The side posts are present, though the Kokades (Cockades) and chinstrap are missing. The leather visor is unlined. The inside is lined with a calfskin sweatband, and leather interior (which would have been laced). The helmet is stamped ‘CB27’ to the back visor. The pickelhaube’s leather has shrunk, and the black laquer finish has crazed, which is normal and typical for helmets of this age and type.
Condition
Leather has shrunk; the laquered finish is crackled. The silvered brass is tarnished, and there may be missing elements. The inside of the helmet lacks its original silk lining.
