An original oil painting on canvas Windmill South Yarmouth, Mass by Henry Frank Shapleigh (American, 1842-1906). The artist was born in Boston, but traveled and painted in California, Florida, and New Hampshire and throughout Europe. The piece is in its original frame with an attached plaque detailing the title and artist. The frame is painted gold and ornately carved with a wire on the back for hanging.
Shapleigh served in the Union army during the Civil War. He then studied art in Paris at the Barbizon school. He was part of the White Mountain artists who in the late 19th century traveled to New Hampshire to paint landscapes of the White Mountains as a form of regionalism.
