Chippendale Style Mahogany Secretary Desk from Maddox Furniture
Item Details
A Chippendale style mahogany secretary desk from Maddox Furniture Company out of Jamestown, NY. The top of the desk features a two-tiered bookshelf behind double glazed glass doors with a geometric wood veneer overlay. The top of the piece features a scrolling broken pediment with a center finial. The desk has wood sliders which pull out to provide support for the writing surface. Inside the desk is a small door called a “prospect” door. On either side of this are hidden drawers that pull out for storage of various documents. The fitted interior provides an assortment of shelves, cubbyholes, drawers and doors. The base of the desk has four serpentine style drawers with machine cut dovetail joints and double brass batwing plate loop hardware. The desk is supported on short cabriole legs with ball and claw feet. The desks are often referred to as ‘Governor Winthrop Desks’ (see link). The piece is in two pieces.

Condition
Wear is consistent with age and use. Desk has some scratches and scuff marks. One of the internal drawers is missing pull knob. No key included. The top finial is broken but the piece is inside the desk.
