Alexis Hubert Jaillot 1694 Hand-Colored Map of America
Item Details
An antique hand-colored engraving of a map of North America by French cartographer and publisher Alexis Hubert Jaillot (1632 – 1712), titled Amerique Septentrionale, created in 1694, based on the earlier maps of Nicolas Sanson (1600 – 1667), often referred to as the ‘father of French cartography.’ The hand-coloring appears to have been added much later, seemingly in last 100 years. The title is printed within a gorgeous crest flanked with birds and figures holding bows and arrows, topped with a gold crown. A small key is placed within another beautiful, less elaborate crest to the lower left. This map is protected behind glass in a narrow wooden frame with gold tone trim.
