Snead & Co. WWI Mortar Shell Victory Lamp

Item Details

A WWI mortar shell victory lamp. This historic lamp is fashioned from a real WWI-era 75mm mortar shell casing. The original label (which will be included with the lamp) states that the round was manufactured by the Snead & Company Iron Works (SCIW) in New Jersey in 1919. The shell was never in the theatre of war, but was salvaged after what was known as the ‘Morgan explosion’ that occurred in multiple bursts at the T.A. Gillespie Company shell-loading plant in Morgan, New Jersey on October 4-6, 1918. Engraved to the side of the shell casing is ‘Victory – Nov 11, 1918’ and ‘75 mm shell’. A copper band around the center is engraved, ‘They shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruning hooks: Nation shall not lift up sword against nation. Neither shall they learn war anymore.’ The lamp comes with a burlap barrel shade (which is not original to the lamp), and a brass finial.
