18th Century Map of France

An unframed circa mid-18th century map of France, drawn and engraved by R.W. Seale for Nicolas Tindal’s translation/continuation of Paul de Rapin’s History of England. The map is undated but at the earliest may date from the second edition of the History, published 1732, which was the first edition of the work to feature maps. The map is highly detailed, with cities, ‘great towns’, ‘parliament towns’, archbishoprics and bishoprics, universities, forts and castles, and sites of famous battles marked with different symbols, in addition to physical features such as rivers and mountains.
