J. Baringer Portrait of a Horse Oil on Canvas
Item Details
A signed oil on canvas portrait of a horse by J. Baringer. This masterful example of equestrian portraiture draws its inspiration from George Stubbs, A.R.A. (British, 1724-1806) whose work was favored by royalty such as George IV, the nobility, and industrialists such as Josiah Wedgwood. The muscular horse is depicted in profile standing in a fenced paddock. His docked tail is proud as he surveys the bucolic valley beyond. The canvas is signed ‘J. Baringer’ on the lower left as well as on the stretcher in chalk. The canvas is marked, on the reverse, ‘1038/80’ and has a tag marked ‘G.A.G. 1506 87’. The untouched and unlined canvas is housed in a carved gilt wood frame with a modified egg and dart detail.
The 1812 edition of The Sporting Magazine , pages 75 – 76, mention a ‘J. Baringer’ exhibiting horse portraits at the Royal Academy, London, though a definitive attribution can not be determined.
