English Flow Blue Platter Circa 1891-1894

Item Details

A large Flow Blue platter from the New Wharf Pottery, Burslem, Stoke-on-Trent, England, circa 1891-1894. In 1878, brothers William and Thomas Wood established a pottery at the wharf being built along the Trent and Mersey Canal in Stoke-on-Trent. They were known for manufacturing earthenware pottery for ‘home and foreign markets.’ This ample platter has a tradition Flow Blue technique, with a less than usual pattern called Oriental, which features a desert oasis image to the center, with ornate structures, palm trees, and camels and riders at rest. The image is surrounded by a delicate floral band and the rim is decorated with framed images of florals and structures resembling minarets. The rim has an undulating edge and the piece is stamped to the reverse.
