A 20th Century Ming dynasty style brass Buddha. This stunning brass sculpture is crafted in the style of Ming dynasty Xuande period (1425-1435) sculpture. The Buddha sits in the lotus position, draped in flowing robes and decorative garments. The traditional auspicious marks of snail-curl top knot hair, elongated earlobes, and third eye mark adorn the peaceful downward gazing face of this magnificent statue. The Buddha’s hands are help in a mirror image of the traditional Bhumisparsha Mudra (Gesture of Witness). An embossed plaque labeled Da Ming Xuande Nian Zhi (Bestowed during the reign of Xuande in the Ming Dynasty) is affixed to the back of the piece. As per the tradition of the time, the sculpture has an internal hollow area for the storage of sacred Buddhist texts. The inside of this piece does contain an artifact that has remained unexamined. The Xuande emperor ruled over China from June 27, 1425- January 31, 1435. His reign marked the height of the golden age of the Ming dynasty, a time marked by great harmony and a flourishing of the arts.
