Rare Antique R.S. PRUSSIA. Portrait Porcelain Plate

Item Details

A Rare Antique R.S. PRUSSIA. portrait porcelain plate. The hand painted plate contains five portrait medallions centering roses with cobalt and gilt decoration. It has a raised textured perimeter and gold leafing. It is from the late 1800s and has the R.S Prussia wreath and star mark on the bottom of the item. Most original marks were applied fairly late in the production process. They are protected by only a light glazing and are subject to wear. *(mark in photos is worn)
All three portraits are copies after late 18th/ early19th century portraits of European women who overcame societal restrictions on their gender. The woman with the long hair and ribbon that appears twice is Countess Sophie Potoka of Poland (1760-1822). The portrait is a copy after a portrait by Elizabeth Vigee Le Brun (1755-1842). The woman with shorter hair and a ribbon (who also appears twice) is Elizabeth Vigee Le Brun (personal artist to Marie Antoinette), and the other woman with her hair up and no ribbon is Juliette Recamier (1777-1849) who was a French society leader. This last portrait is based off of an 1802 portrait by Francois Pascal Simon, Baron Gerard.
