Item Details

A pair of etchings on paper depicting Köln (Cologne), Germany, circa 1930-40s. The first is a view of the Rhine River, which cuts through the center of the city. The famous Cologne Cathedral and the Great Saint Martin Church rise above the city’s skyline. This print is a hand-colored etching; it is titled Köln, labeled as original, and signed ‘Adler’ in pencil in the lower margin. Several etchings of German cities from this time bear this signature, but the artist is unknown. The second etching is a closer view of the city; it is depicted from a small stone bridge and shows several small brightly colored houses. Again, the Cologne Cathedral rises behind the scene. This etching is an aquatint etching printed a la poupée. An indecipherable title is written in pencil in the lower margin that begins with ‘de la.’ The prints are matted in white and off-white and presented behind glass in simple matching gold-toned frames. A wire is attached to the first for hanging, and an eyehook is attached to the second.

Condition

-painting is beginning to yellow slightly. Light scratching is visible on the frame, and a chip of the gilt finish is missing from the lower right corner of the first print listed.
