Alvina Begay Original Navajo Sandpainting
Item Details
A framed Navajo sandpainting by Navajo artist Alvina Begay. These paintings are traditionally made by pouring tinted sands or powders onto adhesive surfaces to form uniquely textured images and patterns, traditionally believed to return balance and healing to the world. This image depicts four Yei figures dancing around a fire. The traditional Southwest colors of teal and clay red contrast beautifully with pale beige and white across the piece. This piece is laid in decorative pale pink and brown matting cut into a Navajo pattern. The piece is presented in a wooden frame with a pickled finish. A small hole has been poked in the verso of the piece for hanging. A sticker attached to the piece’s verso states the artist and gives information about the tradition of Navajo sandpaintings.
