Hand Made Abstract Art Deco Platter
Item Details
An abstract Art Deco patterned art pottery platter in white porcelain slip in a color palette of red, blue, yellow, grey, black and white. The platter was made with a process called ceramic image transfer. An image is drawn on plaster with many coats of underglaze, and casting slip is poured over the image; the slip absorbs the color and creates a reverse image of the plaster drawing. The piece is then bisque fired and then glaze low-fired with a clear gloss glaze. This process allows for ‘prints’ or multiples to be made of the same design in different colors. Swirl patterns on the underside show the pouring of the slip. The platter has a slightly curved shape to the corners and is functional. Signed ‘GM’ to the reverse and numbered ‘1 of 2’ by Cincinnati-based studio potter Grace Markley.
