Hugo Ballin Painting "Autumn" - Oil on Canvas

American painter Hugo Ballin is known for figure and portrait easel painting, murals and design. In ‘Autumn’, Ballin paints the portrait of a seated woman against the backdrop of a fall landscape using rich autumnal hues. The oil on canvas painting is framed in a beautifully carved gold leaf frame. Signed lower left ‘HB 08’ (Hugo Ballin 1908).

Hugo Ballin (1879-1956) was born in New York City and studied at the Art Students’ League as well as in Italy and France. He became a professional painter and one of his early notable projects was a series of murals for the Wisconsin State Capitol.

Ballin’s notoriety for the Wisconsin State Capital for which he created 26 murals for its interior. In 1917 he began working for Goldwyn Pictures relocating with the movie industry to Los Angeles in 1921 and began producing silent films for his own production company and married
actress Mabel Croft.

Claiming he was a visual artist not a record maker when Hollywood turned to talking pictures Ballin left the film industry and spent the remainder of his life painting. He became the foremost muralist in Los Angeles producing numerous WPA works including the Griffith Park Observatory.
