Henry Major "Philosopher's Wife" and "Gay Philosopher" Lithograph
Item Details
A pair of offset lithographs titled Gay Philosopher and Philosopher’s Wife by Henry Major. Major is a contemporary American painter and caricaturist. Considered an enigma, Major exhibited in the New York area in the 1940s including The Corcoran Gallery Biennial and on Davenports. This art is thought to be a self depiction, and originally titled the Philosopher. Although little is known, Major is described as having a twinkle in his eye and soft spoken, possibly living in an art colony near Provincetown Cape until the late 1940s. The signature on both these pieces indicate these prints are from original paintings not later work by other artists. Work includes the tags and titles Philosopher’s Wife and Gay Philosopher ‘Why worry?’ Prints are mounted under glass in a white wood frame with carved edge with gold-tone brushed accents.
