19th Century Ethiopian Military Sword with Rhino Horn Handle
Item Details
A 19th century Ethiopian military shotel sword and scabbard, circa the 1830s. The blade is by Henry Wilkson, Pall Mall in London, England while the handle/hilt is carved rhinoceros horn. It was made in England for the Ethiopian military. The blade is heavily engraved with acanthus leaves, flowers, and military motifs. Right under the hilt is an engraved Star of David. One side of the sword has a spot for a series of words in the Amharic language. The opposite side is marked with the Royal crest and the words ‘Warranted Sword Maker to H.M. King George, Henry Wilkinson, Pall Mall, London’. The scabbard is a maroon colored leather with embossed patterns. There is a belt that holds up the scabbard and sword.
