William Blaeu Wall Map

An embellished offset lithograph reproduction of a wall map gifted to a Papal Ambassador in 1665 by famed 17th century mapmaker William (Willem) Janszon Blaeu (1571-1638). The map is titled Nova Totius Terrarum Sive Novi Orbis Tabula, which roughly translates to New Map of the World. It depicts two side-by-side views of the world surrounded by intricate illustrations of important characters in history and mythological stories. The image is covered in metallic areas of ink that give the map an intricate sheen. The panel below the map provides information about the Blaeu mapmakers and more information about this specific, and particularly fine, example of a Blaeu map.
