A Collender Goldsmith (England, 1800-1900) signed and dated equestrian portrait oil. 1892 oil painting features the champion British thoroughbred, Gamecock, winner of the Grand National steeplechase race in 1887. This intimate and delicately rendered portrait features a bay thoroughbred standing at rest in his soft hay strewn stall. Signed lower right with the horse’s name to the lower left.
Collender Goldsmith is a listed and renowned British artist widely known for his equestrian oil paintings. His signature style featured horses of fame and renown, pictured in intimate stall settings with blankets, and sometimes terriers. Goldsmith typically signs and dates his paintings naming the horse and oftentimes the race won and other accolades in the portrait.
