18th Century Sabot Shoes

Item Details

A pair of 18th Century European sabot right and left shoes, likely from England or France working class. These shoes have leather tops and wooden soles with small rectangular platforms behind the ball of the foot. Copper welt holds the leather and wood pieces together. The introduction of right and left foot soles, instead of a straight sole, appeared in the mid-18th century. Copper welting disappeared for working class shoes in the early 19th century. The shoe is well worn and foot and toe impressions from the original owner are visible.

Condition

- good, leather and welting still intact. Condition consistent with age and use.
