19th Century Stone Lithograph of David Roberts Painting
Item Details
An 1849 stone lithograph by Belgian artist Louis Haghe (1806-1885) from his book Egypt and Nubia, after an 1836 drawing by English-Scottish painter David Roberts (1796-1864) titled Interior of the Temple of Aboo Simbel. In 1838 and 1839, Roberts traveled throughout Egypt and the Holy Land sketching remarkable landmarks and scenes. Haghe produced 247 lithographs based on the drawings at a remarkable pace, and published them in 1849; this is an image from that book. The image depicts the interior of The Great Temple at Aboo Simbel in Nubia, which is decorated with eight huge pillars carved into the form of Ramses. Several small figures stand at the base of the pillars, appearing minuscule next to the massive statues. The title, the date ‘Nov 9 1836, Nubia,’ and the artist’s name are drawn into the original. The title and publishing information are printed in the lower margin of this print. The print is matted in white with drawn yellow, gray and gilt embellishment, and is presented behind glass in a simple gilt frame with a wire attached to the verso for hanging. A Closson’s Gallery sticker is also attached to the verso. More information about the artists is available at the links below.
