"Cubist Painting, Violin" Original Oil on Canvas by Perle Fine

An incredible signed original oil painting titled ‘Cubist Painting, Violin’ by renowned Abstract Expressionist artist Perle Fine (American, 1908-1988). This painting is an oil on canvas and features a Cubist-style violin and abstract forms in gray, blue, orange, yellow, black, and white. The painting measures 35′×29′ and is signed and dated 1938 in the lower left corner. It is housed in a gold-tone wooden frame and charcoal-tinted linen matting.
Perle Fine was an American artist born in Boston, Massachusetts in 1908. In her early twenties she moved to New York to study under Kimon Nicolades in the Arts Students League, and later under Hans Hoffman. Fine was invited to show in many prominent exhibitions in New York such as the ground-breaking Ninth Street Show curated by Leo Castelli, and the New York Painting and Sculpture Annuals, and is considered part of the New York School alongside artists such as Jackson Pollock, Lee Krasner, and Conrad Marca-Relli. In the early 1940’s Fine was one of the young artists and few women promoted by Hilla Rebay and the Guggenheim Museum. Fine’s first individual show was at the Willard Gallery in 1945, and in 1950 she was sponsored by Willem de Kooning and admitted as one of the first women members of the 8th Street Club. Fine died in 1988 in New York. Her work is featured in many very prominent collections such as The Brooklyn Museum, Cheekwood Museum of Art, Corcoran Gallery, Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, The National Museum of American Art, New York University Art Collection, Smithsonian Institute, Whitney Museum of American Art, Addison Gallery of American Art among many others.

There is a small tear in the paper backing of the frame.
