Cast Iron Prison Ball and Chain

A cast iron prison ball and chain stamped ‘Colorado Terr. Prison Canon City.’ The ball and chain include the original shackles which are marked ‘313.’ Canon City is one of Colorado’s smallest cities with a population of approximately 36,000, yet it houses thirteen prisons. One of the thirteen prisons is Supermax, a prison that is said to be the modern ‘Alcatraz.’ Canon City is also home to the famous historic women’s correctional facility that opened in 1873 and the home of the last gas chamber to be used in a prison as an execution method.
